Biographie


Née dans le Bronx, Kat DeLuna a grandi en République dominicaine où son talent émerge dès l'âge de quatre ans. À neuf ans, peu après le retour de la famille aux États-Unis, à Newark dans le New Jersey, elle s'est inspirée du divorce de ses parents pour écrire sa première chanson Estoy Triste (Je suis triste).

La jeunesse de Kat n'est pas facile puisqu'elle et ses s½urs doivent souvent quémander de la nourriture chez les voisins après le départ de leur père. La situation financière difficile de sa mère l'encourage à rester à l'école et à travailler plus fort pour réussir. Elle commence donc à se produire lors d'évènements locaux, partageant la scène avec des noms connus comme Marc Anthony. Pendant ses temps, elle étudie l'½uvre de légendes comme Aretha Franklin et Billie Holiday, qu'elle imite quotidiennement sur une machine à karaoké.

Avec un objectif bien clair en tête, elle est acceptée à l'école des beaux-arts du New Jersey à 14 ans, une école spécialisée fréquentée par des vedettes comme Whitney Houston. Lors de sa première année, elle épluche les petites annonces à la recherche d'auditions afin de mettre son talent en valeur. Elle décide finalement de former un groupe de Hip-Hop latino féminin nommé Coquette.

Tout en travaillant avec Coquette, Kat continue d'être à l'affût des opportunités qui peuvent se présenter et qui pourraient lui permettre d'atteindre son but qui est de devenir une star internationale. À 15 ans, elle a rendez-vous avec le destin quand elle chante I Will Always Love You lors d'un concours de karaoké, qui lui vaut la première place. Elle fait alors la rencontre du célèbre chanteur cubain de salsa, Rey Ruiz. Celui-ci lui offre ses précieux conseils. Elle décide de commencer à écrire ses chansons sans relâche. Elle atteint finalement son objectif quelques années plus tard quand elle est recrutée par Sony-BMG qui lui offre un contrat. À 19 ans, elle lance un premier album intitulé 9 Lives qui paraît au cours de l'été 2007. Son premier single, Whine Up est reprise pour le génerique de SummerSlam 2007 : The Biggest Party of The Summer, qui est le quatrième plus grand show de la WWE.
